The Rock -- This rocky promontory, linked to mainland Spain in the north, pushes southwards into the straits. The Rock is 2.8 x 0.89 miles at its widest point -- and has and area of over 3.7 square miles. The highest point is Mount Misery at 1,388ft. The east side presents a sheer rock face plunging into the sea; the reclaimed land at the foot of the less abrupt west side forms the state of the town. Gibraltar today -- The colony's economy is based on a growing financial services sector and tourism. Gibraltar has retained its free port status and trade is based on transit and refuelling activities. The west side of the Rock shelters the naval and commercial ports as well as the town with its English and Spanish style houses, its pubs and shops. Arabic architecture still persists, notably in the cathedral which has a the plan of a mosque. NB.
